The debate for the suspected affair relating to the plot for the murder of two MPs has been going on for several weeks in Albania. This debate has also reached the European Union.
The EPP (European People’s Party) summit was held in Brussels. The resignation of the speaker of Parliament, Ilir Meta, accused as contractor of the murder of two MPs, was considered by MEPs as an obligatory act for democratic standards.
The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the European Parliament, Elmar Broke, considers the fact that the speaker of parliament has not resigned, as “bizarre”, at a time when an inquiry is under way in relation to the accusations addressed against him.
“First of all, it’s the duty of Albanian authorities to shed light over this issue and carry out an inquiry. If there are accusations against the speaker of Parliament that he has ordered two murders, then the General Attorney is the one who launches an inquiry and in normal circumstances, in a democratic country, the speaker of Parliament resigns. If there’s an ongoing inquiry by state authorities, then it would be bizarre not to resign”, said Broke in a media declaration in Brussels.
The leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha also spoke after the summit. He said that he has obtained the support of EU states and governments “in the joint action of the opposition and Albanian society, to cleanse politics and administration from incriminated people”.
Basha said that he has informed the European Parliament on “Doshi-Meta scandal” and the effort to conceal this affair for six month, as a clique within the state and not as a state ruled by the law”.
Basha added that he had denounced “the constant efforts to conceal the truth, to put pressure on the inquiry and to lead the investigation toward the direction where Mr. Meta, the prime minister or minister of Interior want”.
The leader of opposition says that the accusations raised from within the majority in Albania, were very shocking for MEPs.
“They concluded that such situation is a danger, a threat for Albania, Albanians and their European future”, Basha said.
According to him, under these circumstances, MEPs “gave full support to the Democratic Party to take all necessary measures to turn this affair into a golden opportunity to cleanse politics and institutions from crime and people with terrible criminal records”.
The declaration coming from Brussels obliged SMI to appear before media and react.
Secretary General of the Socialist Movement for Integration, Luan Rama, called on Mr. Elmar Brok not to be used for the interests of criminal clans in Albania.
“The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the European Parliament, Elmar Brok, must not be misused for the interests of criminal clans in Albania. Brok must not play the role of prosecutor and if he wants to find out the truth, let him come to Albania”, Mr, Rama said.
Mr. Luan Rama said that it’s pointless that the leader of DP is making cloned declarations, while stressing that the leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration, Ilir Meta cannot resign on the account of organized crime.
“It’s pointless that Basha makes such cloned declarations. Ilir Meta cannot resign on the account of organized crime”, said Mr. Luan Rama, General Secretary of the Socialist Movement for Integration. /ibna/
