The European elections in Cyprus were held in a calm atmosphere, amid a civil political climate. On the night of the counting of the votes no problems arose that could influence the process, a fact that was recognized by both the parties and the candidates.

Specifically, the Democratic Rally won the lection, but failed to overcome the psychological limit of 30% that was unofficially the target of the party, while AKEL came out as the second party, not succeeding in turn to capitalize on the wear of the governmental.

With applause, however, slogans and accolades from hundreds of members and leaders of their party, friends and relatives of newly elected and re-elected representatives of the Republic of Cyprus in the European Parliament, as well as the leaders of the parties they belong to, the new MEPs Lefteris Christoforou, Loukas Fourlas, Giorgos Georgiou, Niyazi Kızılyürek, Kostas Mavrides and Dimitris Papadakis were declared by the General Electoral Commissioner Kypros Kyprianou.

The DISY and AKEL parties secured one seat each in the first allocation of seats and their second seat in the second seat allocation. DIKO and EDEK, which secured one seat each, took it during the second allocation of seats.

The declaration was held at the Philoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia, immediately after 12:00 at midnight of Sunday 26 May, going onto Monday 27 May, where the official final results of the European elections for Cyprus were announced. As officially announced by the Election Service, from a total of 641,181 registered voters, an amount of 288,483 voted (44.99%). The abstention of 352,698 voters reached 55.01%. The valid ballot papers were 280935 (97.38%), the invalid 5510 (1.91%) and the white 2038 (0.71%).

The statements

The amount of abstinence, the pleasure for the increased participation of Turkish Cypriots and a call for co-operation are stressed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, in a written statement regarding the European elections. In his announcement, the President of the Republic expresses his satisfaction, as today’s elections took place in an atmosphere of absolute political civilization, as is appropriate in a European country. He expresses warm thanks to all those who worked and carried out their mission with complete success. The President congratulates those candidates who will receive the people’s mandate and expresses his assurance that they will work together in the best interests for the Cypriot citizens.

“At the same time, I express my gratitude to those who have exercised their electoral rights, but it is still worrying that a large portion of our compatriots chose to abstain. A phenomenon that must concern us seriously at a Cypriot and European level,” he says. AKEL is on the rise, the party’s General Secretary Andros Kyprianou said, believing that the two goals he had set for the European elections were attained and setting a new goal that AKELwill be the first party in the next elections. Regarding the slogan of the citizens, “AKEL, AKEL, the people’s party,” Mr. Kyprianou replied: “Just as you say. We managed again in these elections to send the message that AKEL is on a rising path”. This path, he stated, they will continue for the benefit of Cyprus and the Cypriot people. “No matter how much they fight us, no matter how they attempt to destroy us, you are the future.”

With this youth, AKEL will always be a strong, powerful force for the people, the party’s General Secretary said. The struggle continues and tomorrow morning we will get to work, he added, in order to promote our goals on the Cyprus problem, which is the solution and reunification, and to create the prerequisites for all of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latinos, to anticipate a better life.

There has been no other such incident in Europe, for a power party to remain the first political force in the face of the unprecedented conditions that our country and our society faced, DISY president Averof Neophytou said, in a statement on the outcome of the European elections, pointing out that this is the sixth consecutive victory for Democratic Rally since 2013. Mr. Neophytou stated that at the same time the party recognizes that society has sent a message not only to the government, but to the country’s political system as a whole, noting that the rise of the nationalist party, even if it has not elected a MEP, can only trouble us. “We have to listen to society and address the causes that ‘create’ this phenomenon that is not only local but also pan-European,” he said./ibna
