The European Commission has issued a strong reaction in relation to the demolition of the orthodox church in the south of Albania and calls on Albanian authorities to respect religious freedoms for the citizens of the country, while it includes the incident in the upcoming Progress Report.
The Greek MEP, Manolis Kefalogiannis, told Athens media from Brussels, that the issue of the church will occupy a special place in the upcoming Progress Report on Albania.
The European Commission has issued an official reply to the Greek MEP, Manolis Kefalogianni in relation to his concern about the demolition of the “Shen Athanas” church in Dhermi.
According to Greek media, which have extracted several parts from the European Commission reply, “respect of human rights and liberties are fundamental values of the European Union”.
“A European Union candidate member country must respect the law and protect religious freedom and cultural heritage”, says the reply that the European Commission office has made public following the Greek MEP’s complaint. /ibna/
