EU Parliament: Greek MPs blocked the issue of German reparations

By Spiros Sideris – Athens

The European formations of ND, PASOK and the “River” once again blocked the issue of the german reparations to Greece. The proposal of the “Independent Greeks” (AN.EL.) MEP Notis Marias, for the organisation by the European Parliament – under the aegis of the Commission of Reports – of a public hearing for german reparations, struck a “wall’, and was passed only by the European United Left and the Europeans Anti-federalists.

According to the announcement of the MEP of AN.EL., the proposal was put to the vote in the closed meeting of the coordinators of the Committee on Petitions in 07.10.2014 and was passed only by the European United Left and the Europeans Anti-federalists – vice president of which is himself. On the other side, against it voted the representatives of the PG of European People’s Party, part of which is the ND, the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, part of which is PASOK and the “River”, and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe and the Greens.

Following that, Notis Marias asked for his proposal to be put to a vote in the Plenary of Petitions Committee by roll call, so that the position of each public policy group and each MEP to be made publicly known. As outlined in a statement issued by his office: “after constant recriminations of Notis Marios with the President and members of the Committee of References, the pro-memorandum european parties  made a U turn, changing their attitude, so as not to be exposed publicly, they accepted the issue of the public hearing for the german reparations to remain open on the agenda of the Reference Committee, in view of the organization of public hearings during the second half of 2015”.

An announcement on the matter was also made by the MP of SYRIZA Giannis Michelogiannakis, which says: “On 14/7 MEP Notis Marias raises the question of german reparations to the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. On 24/9 he brings the issue to the attention of the coordinators of the Reference Committee. On 1/10 he also raises the issue of the return of archaeological treasures. Then the motion of Mr. Maria, on the german reparations, enters as a matter to a vote in the closed meeting of the coordinators of the Reference Committee on October 7. MEPs who vote against it are Manolis Kefalogiannis, Giorogs Grammatikakis Nikos Androulakis, Giorgos Kyrtzos, Eliza Vozemperg, Eva Kaili, Theodoris Zagorakis, Maria Spyraki and Miltos Kyrkos. Why? Our fellow MEPs Kefalogiannis, Grammatikakis and Androulakis owe us an answer”.

In the Committee on Petitions participate on the Greek side Eva Kaili (ELIA), Notis Marias (ANEL), Sophia Sakorafa (SYRIZA), Konstantina Kuneva (SYRIZA), Miltiades Kyrkos (RIVER), Sotiris Zarianopoulos (KKE).

The response of the ND

“Some people, being in apparent confusion, have confused the place where they are. The European Parliament is a place of serious political confrontation and cooperation on European issues rather than reverence of rampant populism for internal consumption alone. Mr. Marias in a minor Committee (the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament), which aims to record requests and reports of European citizens on various issues and in which the ND is not represented by an MP, made an intervention for war reparations. For his initiative he has not informed anyone. He did not seek the support and assistance of any Greek MEP”, notes the ND. “The reason is obvious. To create nonexistent noise. For one minute of publicity”, it continues.
