The EU demands Albania to start the reformation of the justice system

The European Union has demanded to Albania to start the reform in the justice system, as this is the key for the country to move forward in the path of integration. “The start of the reform in the justice system is a priority. Political parties have a responsibility. The vetting procedure must start. We are ready to back the process of implementation”, were the words of the vice president of the EU, Federica Mogherini during a joint press conference with PM Edi Rama in Brussels.

This press conference followed the eighth meeting of the Committee for Stabilization and Association between the EU and Albania.

The EU Enlargement Commissioner, Johannes Hahn said that the reform in justice was the first step toward integration, while now, political parties in Albania must focus on its implementation.

For Mr. Hahn, the scope of the reform is not to come closer to the EU, but to serve the Albanian citizens as good as possible. “And when the EU contributes on this, it doesn’t do it to bring Albania closer to the Union, but it does it to uphold the best interests of Albanians”, Mr. Hahn added.

Mrs. Mogherini expressed the same concern: “Political sides have a responsibility for the implementation of the reform. We back Albania in this process.”

For the Albanian PM, the constant implementation of key reforms would strengthen Albania’s path toward EU integration.

“The voting of the vetting law is an important step for the implementation of the reform in justice”, Mr. Rama said.

He said that it is important that the EU issues a positive recoomendation for the launch of talks. “Albania will meet the expectations”, promised the Albanian PM. /
