The European Commission chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas says the Commission is ready to facilitate the ongoing Cyprus peace talks.
He described today`s panel in Davos, with the participation of the leaders of Cyprus` two communities, a good sign, stating that “the mere fact that this panel is taking place in Davos with these two Leaders there in a way says much more than I could have said.”
Schinas talking to CNA reaffirmed Commission President Juncker`s willingness and personal interest for a solution that has to be found soon.
In his remarks during the midday briefing, he said: “As you know, both Leaders are engaged in a UN-led dialog on the reunification of the island, where there is good progress, good structure and where the Commission would do everything that it can to facilitate both the talks, the ongoing talks, but also whatever else will be needed from us.”
President Juncker, said, “has a personal envoy who is based in Cyprus and who assists the UN and the two parties in these talks. So, the only thing I would have to say is that the mere fact that this panel is taking place in Davos with these two Leaders there in a way says much more than I could have said.”
UN-led peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that would reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
