EU: Belgrade-Pristina talks will continue until all issues are resolved, says Stano

Meetings at expert level and at the highest level in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina will continue until mutually acceptable solutions to all outstanding issues are found once and for all, said EU spokesman Peter Stano.

Responding to questions from reporters to clarify what exactly was discussed at the meeting of experts between Serbia and Kosovo, after which both sides issued contradictory statements, Stano reiterated that the EU as ombudsman did not wish to comment on “every step” of the procedure.

“The aim of the expert-level talks is to prepare for the next high-level meeting in Brussels in September between the President of Serbia and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, but also to discuss all open issues that need to be resolved in order to normalize relations and sign a legally binding agreement, through which all open issues will be permanently resolved”, Stano said.

The EU representative added that the task of the EU, as the main mediator in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, is to allow and facilitate both sides to discuss, find solutions to all outstanding issues and reach an agreement on the normalization of relations.

“The European future of Serbia and Kosovo is guided by a dialogue mediated by the EU, in which all open issues are resolved. We are helping the two sides find common solutions and compromises to close these issues”, Stano said.

Asked about the regular meeting of the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo on September 4th in Washington and the role of the United States in normalizing relations between the two sides, Peter Stano reiterated that the EU-supported dialogue “focuses on a legally binding agreement” and on progress regarding the EU course between Serbia and Kosovo.

“Everything else that Serbia and Kosovo are doing with other parts of the world, and serving as a support to this dialogue and bringing tangible and sustainable results to the normalization, modernization and progress of the EU, is positive”, Stano added.

The United States is an important partner for the EU and Brussels hopes for a “positive result” of co-operation and normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, Stano stressed. /ibna
