PM Edi Rama said today that the situation in the Albanian energy sector has been improved.
Speaking in the 13th meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Energy Community, held in Tirana, the head of the government said that Albania has had a successful Presidency of the Energy Community.
Rama stopped on the situation of the energy sector in the country and declared that the government that he chairs inherited an energy sector on the verge of bankruptcy, in a financial situation without liquidity, which was a real threat not only for the sector, but also for the country’s finances”.
“The power distribution company, which in 2007 started its journey with clean accounting books, ended up with 1 billion USD worth of debt in 2013. 52% of losses due to theft and a completely worn down network, which was over 40 years old in 88% of it”, Rama said.
“Today we have an improved situation”, the PM said, adding that: “From a sector where the government injected 180 million euros every year, into a sector which no longer needs to use up state budget money”.
On the other hand, the country is carrying out a reform in legislation. This week, Albanian parliament will approve the law on energy efficiency.
Albania has a national plan for the development of the sector and a national plan for renewable energy. /ibna/
