Election campaign heats up in FYROM

Ethnic topics and criminality are dominating the election campaign in FYROM.

VMRO-DPMNE led by former PM Nikola Gruevski is accusing the opposition leader, Zoran Zaev of planning to federalize the country by making the Albanian language the second official language in the entire territory of the country.

Criticism has also been launched due to the fact that in several electoral offices of the Macedonian opposition led by SDSM, the Albanian flag is present, because among the candidates there are also three Albanians and SDSM is attempting to attract votes from the second biggest community in the country.

“They’re ready to do everything, make all sorts of concessions, they want to tolerate on the issue of the dual language in all of the country with the only aim of winning an extra seat. This is why we need 63 MPs”, said leader of VMRO-DPMNE, Nikola Gruevski during his meetings with supporters of the party.

But, on the other hand, his opponent, Zaev says that Gruevski is playing the nationalist card and that he was the mastermind of the federalization of the country.

“The idea of federalization was conceived by Gruevski himself. Gruevski is the only one in the country that thinks about federalization. Nobody will be allowed to change the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia”, said the leader of SDSM from Kumanovo.

Experts of political developments say that VMRO-DPMNE is playing with the nationalist card, but according to them, it is hard for this scenario to have an effect on the Slav-Macedonian population.

“This sort of nationalist card is well known among the elites in power. At a time when we have a deep general crisis, is it irresponsible for this situation to be complicated with the topic of federalization”, says professor of political sciences, Arben Adili. /balkaneu.com/
