A magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred on Saturday, at 13.00 local time in Greece, 19 km (11 miles) east of the island of Karpathos in the Dodecanese group of islands. Its epicentre is estimated in a depth of 10 km below sea level.

No damages or injuries were reported, as is often the case with minor underwater earthquakes in the Aegean.

Three days ago another earthquake (measuring 4.4 on the Richter Scale) occurred also with an epicentre in the sea, but this time it was in the south of the island of Crete, 50 km of its coasts (31 mi). The distance between the two epicentres is about 250 km (150 miles)
