The Crisis Management Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is on alert following the earthquake of a magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale. The strong earthquake took place at 1:32 off the Turkish coast North of Rhodes and East of Kos. The sea level on Kos rose after the quake, flooding areas of the island.
In close cooperation with the General Secretariat for Civil Protection and other relevant authorities, the Greek Foreign Ministry has already dealt with the notification of foreign embassies in Greece in the event of the death or injury of foreign nationals. It is already in the process of facilitating communications with the Greek authorities of diplomatic and consular missions of foreign countries to provide consular assistance to their nationals.
At a meeting held earlier with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Nikos Kotzias, the strengthening of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’s cryptographic service to assist the Crisis Management Unit and the transfer to Kos of the Secretary General of Greeks Abroad, Mr. Michalis Kokkinos, to assist government officials already on the island, have been decded. The Greek Embassy in Ankara and the Consular Authorities of Greece in Turkey are also on alert in case they need to provide consular assistance to Greek nationals on the other side of the Aegean./IBNA
