Following the completion of the leadership meeting at Villa Vodno, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev stated that the political leaders agreed to hold early elections on April 12, 2020, while the establishment of a technical government under the Przino Agreement will materialize on January 3, 2020.
The leaders of the six political parties have agreed that the country’s strategic goal must first be met, namely the completion of formal NATO accession:
“Our proposal was for December 22 or 23. There were reactions from those present, especially from the opposition. Then we looked at the other options and found that before Easter holidays, April 12 is the most appropriate date. We have reached a consensus. Let us all be happy”, Prime Minister Zaev stated.
“Ratification of the NATO membership protocol by all NATO member states, after which our Parliament will ratify the protocol and the law on NATO membership, so the elections would be held on April 12, 2020,” Ali Ahmeti, leader of DUI, said after the end of the meeting.
VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski said after the meeting that the early elections were inevitable after the debacle experienced by Zoran Zaev’s government.
“Early elections are coming on April 12, after which when our coalition wins, we will raise our sleeves and work hard to put this country on a fast track for the European Union”, Mickoski says.
President Stevo Pendravski has called a meeting of political party leaders after the country failing to secure a date for EU membership talks at the EU summit in Brussels this week./ibna
