Publisher of newspaper critical of the government dies in Skopje, investigations under way

SKOPJE, 28 MARCH 2013

Well-known FYROM journalist Nikolla Mladenov was found dead at a car accident site. Police said they are investigating the causes of the death.

The accident happened along the Skopje-Veles highway. Mladenov’s Mercedes Benz car had veered off the road and ended up in a precipice below the highway, police said.

Mladenov was one of the most popular journalists in Skopje and publisher of the weekly “Focus,” which was one of the most well-read papers known for its anti-government editorial line.

Mladenov funeral will be held Thursday in Skopje.

The Forensic Medicine and Crime Institute did not release any information on the case, adding they were expecting first an examination of the body.

The U.S. Embassy in Skopje reacted in relation to the case, stating: “Nikolla Mladenov’s defiant, witty and sometime tough remarks were an important part of an honest assessment of the society and a key part of an open and healthy public dialogue.” “His voice will be missed,” the Embassy noted.
