SYRIZA and New Democracy agreed to two debates ahead of the elections. The first, on Thursday, September 10, will involve all political leaders except from Golden Dawn, while the second, on Monday, September 14, the television battle will be between Tsipras and Meimarakis.
On the issue there was communication between the spokesman of SYRIZA, Olga Gerovasilis, and the director of the press office of the ND, Penelope Gavra.
The two agreed on these dates.
It is the first time that debates will take place since the early elections in 2009, when Kostas Karamanlis and Giorgos Papandreou were pitted against each other.
Appeals from the KKE
The KKE declares its strong opposition to the possibility of a debate between only two political leaders.
“The conduct of such debates is aimed at creating an artificial polarization and the trapping of people in a pale imitation of the old two-party system. We also disagree to the possibility of carrying out debates with all political leaders, because past experience has shown that it offers nothing in the objective and all-round informing of the Greek people for party positions through a process of parallel monologues, which repeatedly in the past has been criticised by the public and the journalists who participated in it. The opposition of the Communist Party has to do with the substance and not the dates”, indicated in the announcement.
Golden Dawn threatens with occupation of ERT
Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos has been excluded from the debate. The party reacted with rage and threatens with the occupation of the studio of ERT during the debate.
“They organise debates of political leaders without the leader of the third political party, blocking Nikos Michaloliakos of the Golden Dawn, which is why we will occupy ERT with a thousand people and they will be looking to find studios… in Karpenisi (mountain town), to tell their lies the politicians of corruption and of the memorandum”, wrote the announcement of the Golden dawn.
