One day strike starts in education and health

Pristina, January 30, 2015/Independent Balkan News Agency

All pre-university educational institutions in Kosovo have started a strike today, organized by the Teachers’ Union. The organizers of the strike demand the full application of the Collective Contract, 2 Euros a day for food expenses, 0,5% increase of payment for every year of work, 70% of tools for teachers who have to commute and three supplementary salaries.

But, not all unions have backed this strike. Kosovo’s Education and Culture Union has announced that it will not participate in the strike, thus agreeing with the Parents’ Council.

So far, there’s no information as to how many schools have suspended teaching. Head of the Union, Rrahman Jasharaj, said that the strike will be successful.

Health sector in the territory of Kosovo has also launched a 24 hours strike.

“Today, Health Union has launched a strike at 7 am. We ask the citizens to understand us”, said Blerim Syla, head of the Health Union, who said that the strike will continue until 7 am on Saturday.

But, ERs and several other wards are still operational. Health Union demands “the Collective Contract to be respected and for talks to start with the aim of pay increases”.

Meanwhile, the government of Kosovo has announced that the application of the Collective Contract in general cannot be made until the budget is reviewed in June. /ibna/
