Cyprus: Two Ministers appointed Attorney General and Assistant Attorney General

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, exercising the powers provided to him by the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, decided to appoint George Savvides, current Minister of Justice and Public Order, as Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus.

Furthermore, the President of the Republic decided to appoint Savvas Angelides, the current Minister of Defense, as Assistant Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus.

The confirmation ceremony of the new Attorney General and the new Assistant Attorney General will take place on July 10, 2020.

The President of the Republic wishes to express his warm gratitude to the former Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nicolaou, who, taking into account the completely unsubstantiated and unjustified objections expressed by opposition parties and, in order to preserve the democracy of the State, the prestige of the institution of the President of the Republic, did not accept the proposal to assume the position of Attorney General.

Details of the reshuffle that will follow, as well as the dates of confirmation and assumption of duties of the new officials will be announced within this week./ibna
