The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, had a telephone conversation today with the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel and then with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte.
In a written statement, the Director of the Press Office of President Anastasiades, Viktoras Papadopoulos, stated that during the telephone conversations both the German Chancellor and the Italian Prime Minister expressed their full support for the Republic of Cyprus and its sovereign rights in relation to the provocations and illegal actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus, but also in relation to the threats on the issue of Famagusta.
The President of the Republic exchanged views with the two leaders on the forthcoming European Council meeting on 24 September and agreed that they would be in constant contact in order for the EU to effectively contribute to the removal of Turkey’s illegal actions in both the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus and and regarding the threats for the settlement of the enclosed city of Famagusta.
Yesterday at noon, Nicos Anastasiades had a long telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with whom they agreed on the common line that Cyprus and Greece will follow at the forthcoming European Council, with the Greek Prime Minister reiterating Greece’s firm support for the Republic of Cyprus.
Earlier yesterday, the President of the Republic had talks in Nicosia with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, who stated that he was in Cyprus to convey a clear and concrete message, that EU solidarity should be indicated by deeds and not words and that the Turkish provocations are not an issue that concerns only Cyprus and Greece./ibna
