The Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Yiorgos Lakkotrypis during a meeting held Wednesday in Luxembourg, briefed the Vice President of the European Commission, Commissioner for Energy Union, Maros Sefcovic on the latest energy developments in Cyprus and the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the informal EU Energy Council.
Lakkotrypis noted during the meeting that the recent discovery of a great natural gas deposit in Egypt reaffirms the important perspective of the Eastern Mediterranean in natural gas terms, as well as the role the region could play in differentiating EU energy supply.
The Cypriot Minister and Vice President Sefcovic also discussed the EU contribution in Cyprus and Eastern Mediterranean energy infrastructure, as well as the next steps for the creation of the Energy Union.
Moreover, Vice President Sefcovic visit to Cyprus early next year was confirmed.
The main topic of the informal EU Energy Council meeting, the deliberations of which are concluded today, was the funding and the investment opportunities in the new energy technologies.
