Cyprus: Dimitris Syllouris resigns as House Speaker

Dimitris Syllouris announced his resignation from the position of Speaker of Parliament, noting that he maintains the firm belief that “in no way have I violated the Law”, but that his resignation removes from some the pretext that my presence in office of the Speaker of the Parliament hinders in any way the smooth functioning of the Parliament, something that “I would never think of doing”.

“In a previous statement I had stated that I would not resign from the post of Speaker of Parliament until the completion of investigations conducted by the State. I had also noted that I have already made my decisions about what I will do after the completion of the investigations”, Dimitris Syllouris says in a written statement.

He further adds, “I have stated that in the event that the Attorney General of the Republic deems that he should apply to the Supreme Court with a request for the waiver of my parliamentary immunity, in the context of the relevant inquiries, I do not intend pose any objection, whatever this might imply”.

“My decisions were based on the firm belief that I have not done anything legally wrong and that my possible resignation would leave the impression to the contrary”, he notes.

Nevertheless, Dimitris Syllouris continues, “I find that the continuation of my stay as Speaker of Parliament has been misinterpreted”.

“This misinterpretation, as well as the obvious desire of some to take advantage of the whole issue for their own political goals and plans, as well as the pretexts for the dysfunction of the Legislature, led me to the decision to submit my resignation from both the post of President of the Parliament and as MP”, he announced.

He notes that “I maintain the belief that in no way I have violated the Law. With my resignation, I want to remove from some the pretext that my presence in the office of the Speaker of the Parliament hinders in any way the smooth functioning of the Parliament, something that I would never think of doing “.

I expect, he states, “that the competent authorities will proceed as soon as possible to the examination of all pending issues, including the complaint I have already submitted to the Attorney General, concerning the commission of a criminal offense against me and the violation of my constitutional rights, so that to show who is really involved and who is not”./ibna
