Minister of Defense Christoforos Fokaides is going to be in Tallinn on Wednesday, where he will participate in the summit of the European Union Ministers’ Defence Ministers.
The main topic of discussion will be the deepening of defence cooperation in Europe. In particular, the Defence Ministers will assess the progress made and set the next steps in the establishment of the PESCO, as well as the implementation of the EU’s Global Strategy on Defense and Security and its Action Plan European Commission to strengthen European defense.
Fokaidis is expected to showcase Cyprus’s determination to remain at the top speed of European integration and defence issues. The transformation of the National Guard into a semi-professional army, the reorganization and modernization of the Armed Forces in general, as well as the new armament program and new infrastructure, make Cyprus even more important in the south-eastern neighborhood of Europe. These data, combined with the strategic defence agreements signed by Cyprus with the neighboring countries over the past two years, in the light of the increased interest in energy security issues and new asymmetric threats, will be highlighted by the Minister of Defence, both within the framework of the Synod and in bilateral contacts with Defence Ministers and Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
It is noted that replacing FM Kasoulides, Fokaidis will also participate in the Informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers meeting immediately after the end of the Ministerial summit of Defence Ministers in Tallinn./IBNA
