Cypriot and Greek Defence ministers Christoforos Fokaides and Panos Kammenos held a meeting today at the Ministry of Defence in Nicosia, where issues of bilateral and European interest were discussed, as well as initiatives undertaken jointly at the regional level.
Among other things, they made a positive assessment of developments in the context of the PESCO operation as it has been shaped, in particular as regards the need to ensure consensus on third country participation in individual programmes.
The adoption of programmes of particular national interest for Cyprus and Greece, such as maritime surveillance, cyber-threat, the creation of a network of business support nodes and crisis management, is a positive step. Greece and Cyprus coordinate to exploit opportunities created at both political and operational levels in the context of the under formation new European defence union.
It was also decided to further strengthen the cooperation of Cyprus and Greece with regard to joint armaments programmes, aiming at exploiting opportunities offered for synergies and co-financing under PESCO. To this end, it has been decided to set up a Standing Technocratic Committee between the two ministries.
Finally, following the successful organization of the tripartite meeting of the defence ministries of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt yesterday, as well as the tripartite talks with Israel that were preceded, it was decided, in consultation with third friendly countries, the organization of new tripartite meetings of defense ministers at a regional level, with the aim of promoting a stability and security network in the wider region./IBNA
