The President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis chaired today at the Presidential Palace a meeting of the National Council.
After the meeting, Deputy Government Spokesman Panayiotis Sentonas told the media that “the President of the Republic briefed today the members of the National Council on the latest developments, but also on the initiatives he has undertaken in relation to the Cyprus issue.
First of all, the President of the Republic briefed on the content of his meeting with the UN Special Envoy for Cyprus Jane Holl Lute, who conveyed to him the UN Secretary General’s decision to convene an informal five-party meeting on the Cyprus issue in New York.
Second, the President briefed on the telephone conversation he had with the UN Secretary-General on 11 January, the subject of which was the informal five-party meeting, the report of the Secretary-General’s good services and the letter recently penned by President Anastasiades to Mr. Guterres .
The President of the Republic also presented the proposals he forwarded to the UN Secretary General, responding to his call for specific Confidence-Building Measures to assist in the resumption of negotiations.
After the briefing by the President of the Republic, an extensive discussion followed where the members of the National Council presented their views and proposals.
The President of the Republic suggested to the members of the National Council that they accompany him to the informal five-party meeting, as this constitutes a crucial meeting on the Cyprus issue. Of course, this will be discussed at a later stage when a specific date for the conference is set by the UN Secretary General.” /ibna
