As part of his contacts with European leaders, Cypriot President Mr. Nicos Anastasiades had a phone conversation this afternoon with the Prime Minister of Spain Mr. Pedro Sanchez, as government spokesman Kyriakos Kousios announced in a statement.
During their talk, the President of the Republic and the Spanish PM discussed the issues concerning the Multiannual Financial Framework, as well as the details concerning the philosophy permeating the process of granting various amounts to the Member States.
President Anastasiades also highlighted Cyprus’ special conditions as a small country with no direct connection to the EU that has suffered key losses, especially in the tourism and services sectors on which the Cypriot economy relies, due to the consequences of coronavirus pandemic.
At the same time, the President of the Republic informed Mr. Sanchez about Turkey’s illegal actions against the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus, but also about Turkey’s destabilizing role more broadly in the Eastern Mediterranean, asking for Spain’s support for a decisive response at EU level.
Finally, President Anastasiades thanked the Spanish Prime Minister for Spain’s steadfast support to date.
For his part, the Prime Minister of Spain assured the President of the Republic of the support on behalf of himself and his Government. /ibna
