Today, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades on his own initiative had a phone conversation with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, and conveyed a relevant decision for the gradual lifting of the restrictions on traveling through the border crossing points.
An exchange of views followed and there was an agreement that, starting June 8, movement through the points where traveling takes place via motor vehicles will be initially allowed for the following categories:
-Turkish Cypriots who work or study in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus or receive medication and medical treatment at the Oncology Center of the Bank of Cyprus, at the Institute of Neurology and Genetics and in Public or Private Hospitals of the Republic.
-Greek Cypriots or Maronite Cypriots stranded abroad who permanently reside in the occupied territories.
It is noted that the movement of Turkish Cypriot students will be allowed from the crossing point of Ledra Palace, where they will be taken to their places of study by bus.
At the same time, traveling for humanitarian purposes continues.
The Cypriot Government will regularly conduct random sampling tests on people who will be traveling by the crossing points.
It was also agreed that the bi-communal Technical Health Committee be convened as soon as possible, to exchange views on the gradual opening of crossing points, depending on the epidemiological situation at the time. /ibna
