The 19th conference of the Contracting Sides of the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and Mediterranean Seacoast Region has approved the proposal of the Albanian Ministry of Environment to hold the COP20 Conference next year in Tirana.
During the conference held these days in Athens, the participants approved Albania’s invitation, by deciding for the 20th Conference to be held in Tirana at the end of next year.
Albania adheres in the Barcelona Convention since 2000. The Barcelona Convention and its Protocols, along with the Action Plan for the Mediterranean, are part of the UNEP Program for Regional Seas.
Currently, Barcelona Convention has 21 member countries, which also include countries of the EU. Among the objectives of the Convention are: evaluation and control of marine pollution, the provision of a sustainable management of marine life and seacoast resources, integration of the environment in the economic and social development, protection of marine environment and the coast by preventing and reducing pollution and also eliminate pollution as much as possible, both on land and at sea, protection of natural and cultural heritage, strengthening of solidarity between Mediterranean Coast State and the improvements of the quality of life. /ibna/
