In favour of deleting the Greek debt stands the American scholar nobelist, Noam Chomsky, stressing that the same “happened with the Germans in 1953”. He went as far as to blame Brussels, for “destroying Greece” with their policies.

“SYRIZA came to power following a mandate of the people, who said that Greece must stop implementing Brussels’ policies and that German banks are destroying the country”, Chomsky stressed in an interview with Euronews, further noting that these policies have increased the Greek debt. “50% of young people are unemployed and around 40% of the population lives below the poverty line. Greece is being destroyed”, said the well-known scholar from the US.

Asked about other countries facing problems with their debt, such as Spain and Portugal, and if their debt should also be deleted, Noam Chomsky replied that the same should apply to thoem as well.

Although Chomsky has stressed on several occasions that these policies lead to disaster, he is seeing signs of optimism on the horizon: the independence of Latin America, SYRIZA and Podemos.

“Hopefully there is finally an uprising of the people against the devastating economic and social policies deriving from the bureaucracy and the banks, and this is promising. It must be”, Chomsky said.
