Change of course for all of Europe asks the President of the German trade union Ver.di Frank Bsirske and notes that European austerity policy for Greece has failed. He calls on lenders to give Greece in Athens the opportunity to implement a more just and social policy.
“The austerity policies counteract all economic logic and reduces the redistribution from the bottom up. We must fight together across state borders for a democratic and social Europe, says Mr. Bsirske in a statement and, with particular reference to Greece, said: “The European austerity policy in Greece has failed. It suppressed growth caused explosion of debt, plunged a large part of the population into social misery and dissolved the democratic and trade union rights. The Greek people voted against this policy. European institutions and governments must give the new government the opportunity to implement a policy change and to finally share the burden of the crisis fairer. Everything else will be wrong signals for democracy and social cohesion in Greece and in Europe”.
