The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, received today at the Presidential Palace the Chairman of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Eliot L. Engel. After the meeting, the US official told reporters, among other things, that with the President of the Republic they discussed the relations between Cyprus and the United States.

“We both agree that things are moving in a positive way, and that we have the opportunity now to have an unprecedented proximity to the bonds between our two countries. And I want to do whatever I can. I have always been a supporter of Cyprus. I have always been in the Foreign Affairs Committee and now as its Chairman I want to do everything I can to continue to strengthen the relationship between Cyprus and the US,” he said.

When asked whether the strengthening of this relationship included the removal of the arms embargo, Mr Engel said that “negotiations will be held, discussions will be held and I think there will be progress. We are no longer in the 70s and we have to face every problem with a new approach. And I am in favour of this. I think we have the opportunity to bring our two countries closer than before, and I want to be part of it. I think it is important for both countries.”

“I believe that the United States and Cyprus have many common goals concerning democracy. I am excited about the prospects for cooperation with Cyprus. I am excited about the prospects for cooperation of our ally Israel with Cyprus. I think we have an opportunity for peace and cooperation like never before.”

Finally, Mr. Engel said Cyprus’ rights in the energy sector are, as he said, “exciting”./ibna
