Bulgaria: Pompeo drags Judge Mitalov in major corruption scandal

Today, I bring to the fore the Judge of the Special Criminal Court of Bulgaria Andon Mitalov for his involvement in a significant case of corruption. In his official capacity, Mitalov was involved in corrupt acts that undermined the rule of law and seriously jeopardized the independence of democratic institutions in Bulgaria.

This determination is made in accordance with section 7031 (c) of the State Aid, External Operations and Related Programs Act 2020 (Div. G, P.L. 116-94). According to Article 7031 (c), when the Minister names foreign government officials for their involvement, directly or indirectly, in significant corruption, such persons and their immediate family members shall not be entitled to enter the United States.

The law also requires the Foreign Minister to declare publicly or privately or to identify these officials and their immediate family members. In addition to Mitalov, I announce his wife, Cornelia Stoykova-Mitalova, and his daughter, Gergana Mitalova.

This is the first such action in Bulgaria and confirms the US commitment to fight corruption in Bulgaria and worldwide. The United States continues to stand with the citizens of Bulgaria in their fight against corruption. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will use these principles to promote accountability for corrupt actors in the region and globally. /ibna
