On Tuesday, Kosovo and Serbia have managed to strike a deal in the framework of the dialogue for the normalization of relations between the two countries.

The deal has to do with the Association of Serb Communes, telecommunication, energy and the so called “Peace Park” in the north of Mitrovica.

The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini said that “four agreements were signed after a long day of talks between Serbia and Kosovo”.

“This is a major achievement in the process of normalization”, said the European diplomat, asking for the agreement to be implemented by both countries.

Prime Minister of Kosovo, Isa Mustafa declared that all agreements are in line with the Constitution of Kosovo, stressing that this is “a victory for Kosovo”.

“The Association is based on the laws of the Republic of Kosovo and they do not allow any executive powers in Kosovo. Meanwhile, the Association may help the Serb communes to increase efficiency in many domains. But with this, we have not offered a chance for the birth of a Serb Republic, as it is the case in Bosnia”, Mustafa said.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, the agreements reached in Brussels are an investment for the European future.

“This is an investment for the European future of our children. Economic and political benefits are clear, while now, we’re expecting the signature of the SAA, integration in the NATO, liberalization of the visa regime and the accession in international organizations”, he says.

Prime Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic says that the agreements that have been reached in Brussels guarantee security for the Serbs in Kosovo.

“The association of Serb communes has many powers. It will have the chairman, vice chairman, assembly, council, insignia, wing of arms and it will be funded by Serbia”, Vucic said.

Opposition: Association is a step toward making Kosovo a new Bosnia

Meanwhile, representatives of the opposition and MPs have strongly reacted against the results of these talks.

According to them, the agreement for the association is a step toward making Kosovo like Bosnia.

Leader of Self Determination, Visar Ymeri, said that the entire process of talks in Brussels has been unequal and unfair for Kosovo.

“Association of Serb communes means a division of Kosovo on an ethnic basis. The same method as the previous government’s is being followed: damaging concessions to Serbia”, Ymeri declared.

He said that they refuse the agreement in principle and practice and we will contest its implementation in every instance.

MPs from the party in power have also reacted against the agreement.

PDK lawmaker, Nait Hasani has demanded the resignation of the government and the holding of early elections following the signature of the agreement.

“Association of Serb communes in Kosovo with the wing of arms and the insignia and many other powers means division of the state in two ethnic groups. These agreements are in violation with the  Constitution of Kosovo and must not be voted. The government must resign”, Hasani said.

Meanwhile, in the north, Serbs of Kosovo have celebrated with fireworks the agreement on the association.

The mayor of Northern Mitrovica, Goran Rakic declared that the agreements enable Serbs to stay in Kosovo.

He hopes that Pristina will not obstruct the implementation of the agreement on the Association.

The mayor of Gracanica, Vladeta Kostic said that the Association will be a factor of peace in Kosovo. /ibna/
