EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell paid a two-day working visit to Cyprus, where he was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides.
Josep Borrell was received at around 17:30 by Nikos Christodoulides, with the two men tapping on issues related to the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey’s behavior and issues related to security, defense and cooperation within the European Union.
Cyprus’ concerns are also EU concerns, European foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said after his meeting with the Cypriot Foreign Minister, sending a message of strong solidarity to the Republic of Cyprus.
“First of all, let me emphasize that the EU is firmly supportive of the Republic of Cyprus, its sovereignty and its sovereign rights”, he stressed.
My message, he added, “is a message of strong solidarity. The concerns of Cyprus, your own concerns, are also concerns of the EU”.
In a Twitter post, Josep Borrell wrote: “Discussed with Christodoulides how to bolster regional stability and deescalation.
Turkish illegal drillings must stop. The demarcation of exclusive economic zones contested by Turkey must be done in full respect for international law and in good faith, as proposed by Cyprus”.
The Vice President of the Commission was received by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, in the honor of whom he will attend a dinner.
On Friday, Josep Borrell will meet with Defense Minister Savvas Angelidie, with whom they will board a helicopter in order to witness themselves the Turkish drillship Yavuz operating in the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus. /ibna
