In an interview with North Macedonia’s Sitel television network, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov stated that support for North Macedonia has been and continues to be expressed numerous times.
He stressed that the last EU Council discussed the need for North Macedonia and Albania to be supported as much as possible. “Everything lies now in the hands of the Macedonians”, said the Bulgarian prime minister.
Borissov also noted that talks on North Macedonia’s accession to the EU began thanks to the Neighborhood Treaty which he signed in August 2017 with former Prime Minister Zoran Zaev.
“We are a country which started for the first time and enabled through the Neighborhood Treaty for the discussion around the the accession of our dear brothers to the EU to kick off. We did our best to support them, and after that the procedures with Greece began. I defended you in any way in the EU when they did not want to get involved in negotiations at all”, Borissov said.
According to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, there is a long history in the Balkans, which is why we tend to face more problems. /ibna
