National Bank of Romania Vice-Governor Bogdan Olteanu’s duties will be taken over by other members of the executive management, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) announced in a press statement on Friday.
“In respect to Mr Bogdan Olteanu’s being detained, the National Bank of Romania points out that the investigation by the Department of Corruption and Related Offences of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) regards his activity carried out before Parliament entrusted him with the office of BNR vice-governor, according to the DNA release. The BNR mentions that its activity is following its normal course, with the duties of Mr Vice-Governor to be taken over by other members of the executive management, according to the internal procedures in force,” the statement reads.
Vice-Governor of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) Bogdan Olteanu has been charged by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) prosecutors for having requested and received 1 million euro and electoral support from a businessman in exchange for the appointment of a certain person as Danube Delta governor in the period July-November 2008; the money was allegedly sent to the main offices of a political party.
According to a DNA statement released on Friday, Olteanu was detained for influence peddling and will be brought on Friday before the Supreme Court of Justice and Cassation with a proposal for a 30-day pre-trial detention.
“In the period July — November 2008, defendant Olteanu Bogdan, in his capacity as speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, requested and received from a businessman [Sorin Ovidiu Vintu] the amount of 1,000,000 euro and electoral support, consisting of marketing and consultancy services, in exchange for conducting demarches with members of the Romanian Government in order to determine the appointment of a certain person [journalist Liviu Mihaiu] as governor of the Danube Delta. The money was sent by the businessman, via an intermediary, to the main offices of a political party,” the prosecutors maintain.
The statement says that subsequently, following interventions by Bogdan Olteanu, the person in question was appointed on 18 September 2008 as Danube Delta governor.
The DNA points out that other persons are also prosecuted in this case.
