Ankara’s Bilkent University pride and joy for 2017 will definitely be the award the Turkish professor Erdal Arikan, who works there, which he received “for his role in developing coding that will play a vital role in 5G telecommunications“, said the university in a Monday statement.
Professor Arikan is not new to awards and similar victories. In 2010 he was given the IEEE Information Society Best Paper Award while three years later, in 2013, he was granted the IEEE W.R.G. Baker Award for polar coding. This year, he has been awarded the 2017 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Richard W. Hamming medal which will be officially given to him in May.
He works at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Bilkent university in the Turkish capital. What he has achieved will significantly contribute to information systems and technology. He has invented “polar coding”, something that will “increase the capacity of 5G Internet devices.”
Anadolu wrote that “5G is due to launch in 2020 and Chinese telecoms firm Huawei has adopted polar coding as part of the new technology’s global standard that will lower chip power consumption and improve the reliability of wireless communications.”…/IBNA
