Members of Border Police of BiH, in cooperation with officers of the Indirect Taxation Authority of BiH, the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) and the Intelligence and Security Agency of BiH, are implementing an Operational Action codenamed ‘Shisha’, in Sarajevo, Istočno Sarajevo, Gradiška, Prijedor and Banja Luka, under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, and according to the orders of the Court of BiH, biH Border Police announced in the press release.
Searches are still being conducted at 23 locations used by suspects, suspected legal entities, ITA BiH officers, as well as the temporary seizure of documents from the ITA BiH official premises, with the aim of finding evidence and objects important for criminal proceedings, on the grounds for suspicion that criminal offence of ‘Association for the purpose of committing criminal offences’ referred to in Article 249 (2) of the CC BiH, and in connection with criminal offences of ‘Abuse of office or authority’ under Article 220 of the CC BiH, and criminal offence of ‘Customs fraud’ under Article 216 of the CC BiH.
These activities are aimed at proving illegal activities during the import of hookah tobacco, as excise goods, from the United Arab Emirates to BiH, through International Airport Sarajevo. During the aforementioned suspicious imports, the suspects committed customs fraud, which was facilitated by the ITA BiH officers.
These illegal activities damaged the BiH budget by more than BAM 600 000 KM, by avoiding paying excise duty.
Regarding the implementation of this action, the Director of Border Police of BiH Zoran Galić said that BP BiH is continuously taking measures and activities to prevent all forms of cross-border crime and corrupt practices, and is investing all its capacities in protecting the state border.
