The President of the Parliament of Montenegro Aleksa Bečić held an online meeting with the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, Igor Zorčič.
Thanking the Republic of Slovenia for its continued support, President Bečić discussed with President Zorčič about overall bilateral relations, as well as plans for a more agile continuation of Montenegro’s integration into the European Union and for strengthening the alliance within NATO. He expressed the expectation that Slovenia will continue to provide support to Montenegro in the further process of European integration, and that the enlargement policy will be one of the priorities during the Slovenian presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The President of the Assembly assessed that Montenegro has shown democratic maturity and remains consistent with its strategic foreign policy commitment. “Our path is pro-Western and pro-European,” President Bečić concluded.
During their talks, President Zorčič stated that the two countries do not have open issues, which constitutes a solid foundation for further improvement of cooperation and dialogue, stressing that they share not only a common past, but also a future. In light of Slovenia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, he underlined that the Republic of Slovenia will continue to provide support to Montenegro in the further process of European integration, and that the Western Balkans will be among the priorities of the future presidency.
It was mutually concluded at the meeting that there is room for improvement in numerous aspects of interstate cooperation between the two friendly countries, with the expectation that intensive parliamentary diplomacy will be continued during the 27th convocation of the Parliament of Montenegro.
On the occasion of the meeting, President Bečić also thanked the Republic of Slovenia for its assistance to Montenegro during the coronavirus epidemic, inviting President Zorčič to visit Montenegro once epidemiological conditions improve. /ibna
