Head of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso has declared that talks have not yet started with FYROM for accession in the EU, due to the failure to resolve the name dispute with Greece. He has stressed this for the German newspaper “Bild”. “The remaining Balkan countries will be accepted as members, but once they meet the criteria for accession”, said Barroso.
According to him, many of the Balkan countries have fought amongst them for many years, while today, EU accession offers a perspective and an important step for the reconciliation of the region. Speaking on FYR Macedonia, he said that since 2005, it was granted the EU candidate status and that accession talks have not started due to the name dispute with Greece. /ibna/
