The immediate need for the formation by the Greek government of the competent authority that would be responsible for direct payment of the financial assistance of the European Commission to Greece for migration discussed on the phone the Commissioner for Immigration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos and Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras.
Specifically, the amounts relate to the emergency assistance to asylum services, the management of migratory flows and the countries that are the first hosts, civil protection and various other programs.
The Greek Commissioner also had talks on the upsurge of the migration issue in Calais with the interior ministers of France and the United Kingdom, Bernard Cazeneuve and Theresa May, respectively.
“What we need is a European response to better manage migration, which will address all parts of the chain, from the immediate need to save lives to addressing the root causes of friendly countries, the fight against traffickers, more efficient return operations, and the implementation of a long term strategy to strengthen the asylum system and borders”, Avramopoulos said.
