Combat smuggling of migrants as part of a comprehensive approach to immigration, presents as an EU top priority Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner of Immigration, Internal Affairs and Citizenship. His statement came as a response to the recent events of the abandonment of people by slave traders in the cargo ships “Ezadeen” and “Blue Sky” off the coast of Italy.
In a statement issued from Brussels, Avramopoulos congratulated the Italian coast guard and Frontex for the rescue of hundreds of migrants who were in grave danger, under the joint venture “Thirds”.
“The latest events underline the need for decisive and coordinated Europe-wide action”, stated the European Commissioner, adding that the smugglers are discovering new routes to Europe and implement new methods, in order to take advantage of desperate people fleeing conflicts and wars.
“We should not allow smugglers to endanger the lives of people in old, abandoned ships, amid dangerous weather conditions”, said in the same statement, Mr. Avramopoulos.
