New Democracy MP Giorgos Koumoutsakos was brutally attacked by unknown perpetrators, during the rally organized by the Pan-Pontian Federation of Greece, at Syntagma Square, protesting for the statements of Education minister Nikos Filis, who described the massacre of the Greeks of Pontos by the Neoturks as an ethnic cleansing and not as a genocide.
Koumoutsakos made statements on television cameras in front of the monument of the Unknown Soldier, when he received a barrage of insults and objects by a group of young people.
But the incident did not end there, as the bullies attacked the MEP, punching and kicking him, shouting in chorus the slogan: “Bums, traitors, politicians”.
At that point intervened the riot police to protect the MP, who – bloody and with torn clothes – made statements, saying he was attacked by those who serve other interests, noting that as a diplomat has given his own struggle for the Pontiac issue.
It is worth noting that the police did not make any arrests at that time. In the footage of the television channels, however, the offenders’ faces are clearly visible.
Speaking to reporters in Parliament, Koumoutsakos stressed that he was approached by the group of youths who cut him off. They were puching and pulling him and were shouting: “Why do you keep Filis? The pig; Why don’t you resign? You are all the same. You have turned Greece into a colony”.
Shortly after that, a new cycle of incidents started, when the police attempted to remove Koumoutsakos from the point.
Earlier, New Democracy MP Miltiadis Varvitsiotis was himself close to being attacked, when while he was walking down Othonos Street he was verbally attacked by a group of hooligans. He rushed to enter his car and was taken away under a barrage of objects thrown against him by strangers.
In the rally took part other MPs as well, from many parties, without any such incidents.
Information broadcast by SKAI television says that the Greek police (Hellas) has identified several of the perpetrators and arrests are imminent. Mega television reported that Hellas is examining the footage of the video from the bloc of the Golden Dawn.
Mega also aired a video in which it appears that one of the perpetrators of the attack comes from the bloc of the Golden Dawn connected to the MPs Kasidiaris and Iliopoulos. The same source notes that the same perpetrator was in the group that was traveling in one of the five buses carrying Golden Dawn supporters from western Attica.
In his statements in the plenary, Koumourtsakos said he saw that those who attacked him were with the MP of the Golden Dawn Gregos.
Police is studying the video of Koumoutsakos’s beating.
The video that have recorded the attack and beating of ND MP Giorgos Koumoutsakos at Syntagma Square during the protest rally of Pontic clubs, is studying the police to identify the perpetrators of the beating.
According to a police source, the police is searching for the protester with the black jockey who has been recognised from the video, while he is punching Koumoutsakos.
At the same time, a preliminary investigation is carried out, issued from the headquarters of ELAS, to determine whether the police acted as it should have in this case.
