Speaking to children of Cypriot origins, who live in the US, the Cypriot President, Nicos Anastasiades, said that Cyprus does not have the luxury of remaining divided. He went on to repeat that his goal through the new round of peace talks will be to find a solution, which will be beneficial to both the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities.

Anastasiades stressed that ultimate the peace talks objective is to unify the island and rid it of the Turkish occupation. “It is our duty to create the conditions whereby the residents of an EU member state, irrespective of ethnic origin, be they Greek Cypriots or Turkish Cypriots, can live together again,” he added.

He continued saying that “we don’t have the luxury to remain divided” and that  “we don’t have the luxury of putting at risk the survival of Hellenism in this country. We don’t have the luxury to continue to think that either we or Turkish Cypriots can survive by remaining divided”.
