The Cyprus issue, regional and bilateral relations, including the economy and energy, as well as EU-Russia relations, were the main topics on the agenda of a meeting in Nicosia on Wednesday between President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov.
According to Presidential Palace sources, the meeting was excellent and Lavrov was well informed on the Cyprus issue and stood firmly in favour of withdrawing guarantees.
Lavrov thanked Nicosia for its statement and overall stance after Turkish F-16 planes downed a Russian SU-24 aircraft. He also showed an interest in the role Cyprus could play in the broader region as a factor of stability. In this context, the role of Cyprus in the energy sector was also discussed.
The sources noted that President Anastasiades and Lavrov furthermore discussed the economic relations between Cyprus and Russia, as well as ways to export products to each other, despite the embargo, through joint ventures between Cypriot and Russian businesspeople.
