China and Cyprus have been tested and trusted friends and partners for decades, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has stressed, noting that the Government stands ready to cooperate closely with the Chinese President for implementing the Silk Road Initiative.
The Initiative constitutes an ambitious project which was initiated by the Chinese President, covering a geographical region that stretches from East Asia to Europe and seeking to create a mutually beneficial framework, connecting the vibrant East Asia economic circle at one end and the European economic circle at the other.
Addressing the Seminar titled “One Belt, One Road”, organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Cyprus-China Business Association, President Anastasiades expressed his satisfaction with the fact that this seminar takes place less than a month after he completed a highly successful and very fruitful visit to China. The address was read by the Government Spokesman, Nikos Christodoulides.
“During my recent visit to China, I had the honour to meet with the President of China, His Excellency Mr Xi Jinping, as well as with the Vice President, Mr Li Yuanchao, and we had the opportunity to have very productive discussions about ways for further promoting and enhancing our cooperation at both the bilateral and multilateral levels”, he said, stressing that the objective of his visit was also to strengthen the economic relationship between the two countries.
President Anastasiades referred to Cyprus’ competitive advantages, capabilities and opportunities for Chinese companies eager to invest and promote business. Furthermore, he stressed that Cyprus, as a member state of the European Union, offers very attractive benefits and opportunities for Chinese companies to establish their activities and production units in Cyprus.
Referring to the Silk Road Initiative, Anastasiades said that it establishes a new framework for cooperation and development and sets the ground for stability, peace and prosperity. He went on to say that it also sets the ground for extensive cooperation between the interested parties in the trade and economic field, for the promotion of people-to-people contacts in order to establish a mutually beneficial relation.
President of the CCCI Phidias Pilides said the seminar takes place in less than a month after the successful seminar we organised in Beijing on the 17th of October. “This is by no means a coincidence. It’s a concrete proof of the flexibility and the adaptability with which the private sector responds to governments’ decisions that create trade and business opportunities. We are certain, that the new initiative of the Chinese Government to revive the old “Silk Road Idea”, will develop into being the most ambitious infrastructure plan in the world, today”, he added.
In his address, read by CCCI Secretary General Marios Tsiakis, Pilides pointed out that Cyprus’s geographic position, being a stable, democratic and safe country in an area of great business opportunities and prospects with a strong portfolio consisting of, excellent professionals and a business friendly environment is the ideal place for Chinese companies to contact business within the region and beyond.
The purpose of the One Belt-One Zone is to connect the emerging economic giant of China with its Asian neighbours as well as Europe, Africa and beyond through land, sea and air, economically, politically and culturally.
This connection will take the form of jointly undertaken mega infrastructure project financed by specially set up funds by China, Asian organisations as well as by funds provided by the recently form Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank with an initial capital of 100 billion dollars
The scope and magnitude of this initiative is such that it can potentially change substantially the economic map of the world by accelerating the already happening shift of economic power of West to East.
Panicos Kaouris, President of the Cyprus-China Business Association, addressing the seminar said that the purpose of the `One Belt-One Zone` is to connect the emerging economic giant of China with its Asian neighbours as well as Europe, Africa and beyond through land, sea and air, economically, politically and culturally.
