US ambassador to Skopje, Paul Wohlers says that leaders in the country must encourage good cross ethnic relations.
Wohlers gave this message last evening from Tetovo in a lecture held at the University of Southeast Europe in Tetovo.
“Here in Macedonia, it’s clear that the majority of society do not believe that they always receive a fair treatment before the law. It’s in the interest of this government to identify concerns and when necessary, to take action about addressing these concerns, because by concealing problems, we don’t make them disappear, but complicate them even more”, said the US ambassador.
According to him, concealing problems is bad and that cross ethnic relations are a problem in both FYROM and USA.
“We all know that cross ethnic relations in this country pose a problem. There’s nobody to deny this, but you’re not the only country. In America too we have cross ethnic problems. What we do is learn from our mistakes. This is a painful, but important process. In order to move forward, countries must express their sentiments and their problems openly. This also requires free media which spreads diversity and talks about problems in society. There must also be a credible governing and institutional system”, said ambassador Wohlers.
Wohlers also talked about global violence and terrorism, a phenomenon that is spreading and causing hatred between people. /ibna/
