Albanian prosecution files a criminal lawsuit again against former minister of Education

Former minister Myqerem Tafaj reacts: The prosecution’s decision has been made under the government’s pressure

In Albania, General Prosecutor has filed a criminal lawsuit filled with accusations against the former minister of Education and Science from 2009 until 2013, Myqerem Tafaj.

General Prosecution declared that it has concluded investigations and has sent to the Supreme Court the lawsuit against former minister Tafaj, currently an MP. Tafaj is accused of abuse in the line of duty, which receives a sentence of up to 7 years’ imprisonment.

An official source from the General Prosecution told IBNA that the inquest concluded that Tafaj has decided the opening of learning programs in a private university, which is currently closed, in violation of what the Accrediting Council decided.

The university in question is Vitrina, which was one of the weakest ones in the country and which was closed by the government last year.

For the General Prosecution, the opening of new study programs has been intentionally carried out, as the evaluation given by the competent institution was a negative one.

“Tafaj’s actions have led to the opening of learning programs, which are not in compliance with the legal criteria and bylaws for Higher Education in the Republic of Albania”, the official source told IBNA.

For the General Prosecution, with these actions, defendant Myqerem Tafaj, in the quality of former minister of Education and Science, enabled Vitrina university to extend its activity in the domain of education and offer non quality study programs in spite of the fact that it didn’t meet the legal standards. This led to financial consequences for individuals and the state, who is the guarantor of the high learning standards and by favoring undeservingly the educational institution in question.

For the opposition MP, Myqerem Tafaj, the decision of the prosecution is unfair and that it’s been taken under the government’s pressure.

Tafaj reminds to the prosecution about the fact that the opening of study programs is decided by the Council of Ministers and this was also the case with the case of Vitrina university.

The democrat MP says that he strongly supports the application of the law and fight against impunity, but “of course, I cannot accept campaigns or decisions to “cut heads”  for the sake of the political war of the government against the opposition or just for the sake of mere statistics”.

Tafaj says that he hopes “that the court will try this case in an independent and fair way, because I’m convinced about my innocence”. /ibna/

/ibna/
