Albanian Parliament has officially launched procedures for the election of the new President of Republic.
The speaker of Parliament, Ilir Meta has convened the Chairmen Conference with the aim of launching the procedure for the election of the President of Republic, as this was requested by the head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Gramoz Ruci.
The Conference agreed on starting the parliamentary procedure for the election of the President of Republic and the first round of voting for the election of the President of Republic was scheduled to take place on 19 April at 6 pm.
As of this moment, in compliance with the Constitution of Albania, a group with no less than 20 MPs has the right to propose a presidential candidate to Parliament.
Five voting rounds may be held within a period of several weeks. In the three first rounds, the President should be elected with 84 votes in the 140 seats Parliament. In the fourth and fifth round, the President can be elected with 71 votes.
The voting for each round will take place through a secret ballot and without debates. The voting is considered done even when no candidates are proposed.
So far, no official candidate has been proposed.
Prime Minister Edi Rama says that it’s up to the governing coalition to decide who will be voted for the post of the President.
The current President’s term in office expires on 24 July. Nishani was proposed by the right wing which was then in power and earlier, he has served as ministers in the governments led by PM Sali Berisha. /balkaneu.com/
