Albania: Unilateral changes in election law are against the start of accession negotiations, EPP says

Members of the European People’s Party Political Assembly in a document adopted after the teleconference said they fully support Albania’s roadmap for EU membership, including free and fair elections as a prerequisite.

Referring to the changes to the Electoral Code that are currently being discussed in Albania, the EPP states that “the June 5 electoral reform was approved by consensus and is supported internationally and must be implemented as agreed”.

“Unilateral changes at this stage run counter to the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations and the decision of the EU Council to start accession negotiations. The EPP urges the authorities to avoid any unilateral change and to respect the consensus agreement as binding”, the EPP said in a statement./ibna
