Albania: Those affected by last September’s earthquake remain in tents and containers, according to SMI

The Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) has accused the government of having no plans to house the people, as today marks one year since the September 21, 2019 earthquakes that struck Albania in the west, leaving significant damage and many homeless.

In a statement to the media, SMI Vice President Petrit Vasili said that while “autumn has arrived, tens and hundreds of families still live in containers, tents or makeshift shelters made of ruins, leading them to an unexplained misery”.

“There are many families who could not get the rent subsidy and are pushing every day, as if asking for a favour and not their legal right to survive, and all this in many cases has become a bad bargain, where the government is trying to sell and buy the misfortune of people in dire need”, Vasili said, adding that “winter is approaching again, citizens want to see in a concrete way how their situation is resolved immediately”./ibna
