Small businesses in Albania have organized a protest today in response to their inclusion in the Value Added Tax System. This has also sparked the reaction of political parties in the country.
The minister of Finance, Arben Ahmetaj said that this scheme is an important step in the fight against informality. According to him, the aim of this reform is not to generate incomes from small businesses, but to make a more accurate check of the declarations made by large businesses.
Meanwhile, the country’s PM, Edi Rama has commented this issue by saying that “this protest is a mockery to people”. “We lifted the tax for small businesses and the introduction of VAT on small businesses does not increase the tax burden for them at all. All it does is that it enables a better check on large businesses”, Rama said.
The head of the opposition, Lulzim Basha has come out in support of small businesses, saying that the introduction of VAT for this category is a hard blow for the business sector, economy and Albania. /balkaneu.com/
