Albania: Politicians may also undergo vetting

The proposal made by the Albanian opposition for the start of the vetting process in politics seems to be the focus of the meetings that a delegation of the Venice Commission will hold in Tirana on 19 and 20 November.

“The representatives of the Venice Commission will visit Albania on 19 and 20 November as part of the preparation of the opinion on the constitutional draft-amendments which enable the vetting of politicians”, the Venice Commission announces.

Meanwhile, the drafting of the final opinion on this issue will be made in the plenary session that the Venice Commission will hold on 14 and 15 December of this year.

Let us recall that the opposition demanded the constitutional amendments which enable the vetting of politicians, stressing that politics need to be free of criminal elements and corruption, as according to the opposition, these elements had connections with the government. But, the opposition’s request did not receive the majority’s consensus and the experts of the Venice Commission are expected to offer their opinion on this matter. /ibna/
